Career change

How to Change Careers

Changing career rarely means starting from zero. Most people already have transferable skills; what they lack is a map. This page sets out a practical sequence you can follow, and Synora's coach and pathways can help you work through it.

A sequence that works

  • Write down what you actually do well, not job titles
  • Name two or three directions those skills point to
  • Check what those roles ask for in real listings
  • Identify the one or two gaps worth closing first
  • Apply to adjacent roles while you close them

Changing careers at 30, 40 or 50

Age changes the framing, not the method. Earlier on, breadth of experiment is cheap. Later, your existing domain knowledge is usually the asset — moving sideways into a related function is often faster than retraining completely.

Changing without a degree or direct experience

  • Target roles that screen on demonstrated skill
  • Use projects, volunteering or internal moves as evidence
  • Look for employers listing skills rather than qualifications
  • Filter Synora by experience level to find genuine entry points
